Finally woke up…

It is interesting how the human mind works! So, how did I know that I wanted to be a coach? I have always been a people person and understanding humans has been my curiosity for a really long time now.

So, how did I figure out that being a coach was my passion? Its pretty interesting. I did some serious soul search for 2 years before getting into a coaching school. I had already worked for a couple of years, for someone though! Did I relate to it? To an extent. Did I enjoy it completely, so it didn’t feel like work? To an extent. I always knew something was missing and that ingredient was passion. I just wasn’t passionate about the kind of work I was doing because it lacked constant reinvention. All of us dislike change but then think again. But, I loved change and anything that would help me realize my vision. I would get easily bored and needed to reinvent myself all the time.

Finally, I woke up one morning and stopped delaying and started taking action. And, the law of universe and attraction just seemed to bring together all the positive people into my life. In form of Bob Proctor and Jack Canfield and many more. Most importantly, I was aware and clear about my vision to empower youth in my country, India and around the world. Finally, I woke up… now a coach :-)

New year, new career?

New Year brings with it resolutions that people make. Most common of them is “losing weight” or “change in role or workplace”. I am working on the former while getting more passionate by the day about my coaching business.

I see myself moving constantly towards realizing my vision and that is taking action for me. I have spent couple of years to get this place. Understanding my values and belief system has helped me build awareness around what is or isn’t working for me. I always knew that I am going to get into a career that involves interacting with people in the true sense. Listening rather than just hearing them out. And all of this fits beautifully with my core values and belief system.

Good place for me to start was to identify my core values, that I resonated with not something that I have grown up hearing or seeing around me. Two things that worked for me was to identify the qualities I admired from my role model i.e. my mom and also playing the Values Game. Once I identified my core values I got a step closer to knowing myself to a greater extent.  Don’t be overwhelmed if you discover newer things about yourself, remember this is a sign that you are changing. And no one is comfortable with change, so relax!

Next step was to identify and become of my beliefs. I used an ebook to reaffirm some of the beliefs I was aware of and discovered some fascinating things about me. Another way of identify what has or hasn’t worked for you is by looking at your career history. All I can say is enjoy being in your workplace or job as you spend most of your life there.

If you still reading this post, you have lot of work to do. Get yourself a mentor or coach if you want to partner with someone who will hold you accountable and help you move forward. Take action!

Long term employment & your resume

This post is inspired by an article I came across in Careerealism.  Well, I did know that staying longer with an employer isn’t always going to make one marketable in the job market. And, this article reaffirmed my perspective.

As job-seekers, more than often we are focused on what we want and leave out the employer’s needs. That’s where the catch is. If you are looking for that ideal career and want to realize it in 2012, start understanding the expectations of your potential employers. Leveraging the fact that listening and not just hearing what employers are conveying either online or offline is vital to making a successful career happen.

Employers look for people who either can make or save money for them and you would need to showcase the same in your resume and interviews. So, go ahead and showcase the roles you have held at different stages with your employment. Its makes all the more sense if you have a long term engagement with an employer. And, I would have to quote Don Goodman on Careerealism “but they have to know you have grown over the years, and still have ambition, motivation, up-to-date skills, and good intentions for wanting to leave your long term employer”. So, go ahead and get yourself a coach to work with you on this.  Have a super 2012!

Partner to succeed in my career?

First time I heard the word “coach”, I thought of a sports coach. Someone who would guide the time and help them accomplish winning the game. Over the last few years I have discovered more about the term “coach”. It is pretty interesting and refreshing concept and I would love to share this with you.

My take on coaching is defined by three words i.e. awareness, clarity and responsibility. Your ability to take responsibility naturally comes when you are aware as well as clear about your career. And, believe me it so doesn’t feel like a job when you are passionate about your career.

Isn’t it wonderful that you have a sounding board or a partner whom you could talk to about any aspect of your life. As this is a career blog I would like to stress on the importance of finding yourself a coach who you resonate with and can trust. After all coaching conversations are confidential. Good luck with realizing your ideal career in 2012! Happy New Year to everyone :-)
